Disney Dream Cruise: Meeting the Characters

When I graduated from college, I treated myself to a cruise with my good friend, Karrie. At that time, Disney didn’t have its own cruise line, but there was an option for coordinating a Carnival cruise and days at the World. The cruise was ok, but definitely not something I truly enjoyed or planned to do again. Nearly 20 years later, I had the opportunity to cruise again, this time with my family on Disney Cruise Line.

Disney Dream

There was definitely a difference, as noticeable as night and day.  I LOVED cruising with Disney and look forward to doing it again.

My youngest was excited to meet Captain Jack Sparrow, however we missed him on our first day at Castaway Cay due to weather issues.  She was extremely disappointed and worried that we might not meet him at all.

While we were waiting onboard to meet Aladdin, a cast member asked if she had met all the characters she was looking for.  As she explained that she couldn’t find Jack, the cast member asked for her name and told her to look for him the next day on the dock.  She was ecstatic and could hardly sleep.

Early the next morning, we were one of the first people off the ship so she wouldn’t miss Captain Jack.  He called her by name as he came traipsing over the hill and said, “I heard you were looking for me!”  Then he spent 10 minutes in conversation with her and it became the highlight of her trip.

Of course, I met my favorite character in the Port before we ever boarded the ship 🙂

Last minute Halloween (Disney style)

Kids aren’t the only ones who like to dress up for Halloween, however this year it snuck up on me and I didn’t have a costume planned by Monday. So what to do? Pull out the vinyl cutter and create your own.

iron-on-mickey-design

Earlier this year, I made some pirate themed Mickey ears (I’ll post on that one later), so I decided to follow along with that theme. I used a red t-shirt, traced a Mickey pirate design, cut out in layers and ironed on. It took about 10 minutes and worked perfectly for my last-minute costume.

Making a customized jewelry dish

Lately I’ve been adding vinyl to everything, so when I saw these glass square bowls on clearance, I had to have them.  I designed several for my family, then had to create one of my own 🙂

Of course, mine had to have a Disney inspired look, too! This was super easy to design and using my vinyl cutter machine, it took very little time.

I designed 1/2-inch circles and cut out a few in different colors.

For my Mickey dish, I used red and yellow. I placed them in a random, sporadic pattern around the outside of the dish, so the vinyl wouldn’t be ruined by any items placed inside the dish.

Disney-inspired Vinyl Project

All you need is faith, trust and a little pixie dust–Peter Pan

disney vinyl name
My first vinyl cutter creation

I finally got a vinyl cutting machine for my birthday.  I’ve always wanted to be able to cut out my Disney-inspired designs and create projects quickly, however it took me 2 months to finally try cutting something out.  It was a bit daunting for me to get started because the software was very different, but I decided to have faith and jump in.

Before I actually took the machine out of the box, I started looking for inspiration on Pinterest, then a Google search for tutorials.  There are some excellent blogs, websites and YouTube videos that can help you understand where to begin.  The one that really helped me get started was  Melissa at Silhouette School Blog.  She has extensive information for anyone using a Silhouette machine.

One of the great things about finally getting started is realizing that I can create just about anything…generally Disney related, of course!

Celebration cakes

To all that come to his happy place:  welcome — Walt Disney

My husband has a summer birthday, and it just so happens we’ve been at Disney TWICE during his birthday.  Disney does a great job of helping people celebrate all kinds of celebrations…weddings, anniversaries, adoption, family reunions, and especially birthdays.  In fact, we had the most wonderful cake at our on-site wedding.  It was a beautiful, two-tier chocolate cake, with white chocolate raspberry filling, and buttercream icing.  The staff decorated the cake with little Mickey heads and of course, a Mickey & Minnie cake topper.  This was part of the wedding package, so costs are different, but any cake from Disney is pretty yummy.

A few years ago, we rented a specialty cruise (pontoon boat) from the Contemporary Resort and ordered a special Mickey birthday cake.  It was a beautiful chocolate ganache, which is absolutely delicious.  The pontoon driver took us around Bay Lake, then found a great fireworks spot to enjoy Wishes, with the music piped into the boat.  It was a very memorable (and higher priced) experience, which requires at least 90 days advance reservation (407-wdw-play).

On our most recent trip, my husband and I decided to have a special dinner for two at Kona Cafe in the Polynesian resort.  Most restaurants will have a basic 6-inch cake available, however it seemed like a lot of dessert for just the two of us.  Instead, our waiter was able to bring him a special birthday cupcake plate, which was just right.  There is no guarantee that a cake will be available when you walk up, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

If you want to make sure a cake is available or to something more than a basic chocolate or vanilla cake, call the Cake Ordering Hotline at (407) 827-2253.  Since the bakery at the Grand Floridian makes the cakes for the on-site weddings, they have the most options as far as flavors.  I highly recommend calling the main line for ordering a cake 2-3 weeks in advance to get the most options.

If you are looking for more information on ordering cakes, AJ from Disney Food Blog has a great article.

Minnie bag

I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing–that it all started with a mouse. –Walt Disney

My youngest daughter has recently expressed an interest in sewing. Since we are taking a trip with her Girl Scout troop to the World later this year, we decided to make Minnie bags for her friends. I chose pre-made bags and helped her add the embellishments.

Supplies:

  • Pre-made cotton canvas bags (I ordered 10-inch by 12-inch bright colored bags from Oriental Trading) These are thin, but work well for someone just learning to sew
  • Decorative fabric
  • Coordinating ribbon
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Wonder-under fusible paper backed webbing
  • Iron
  • MIckey head template
  • Ironing cloth (I use an old plain pillowcase)

This cialis samples Get More Info is the way how this Ajanta Pharma product is not limited to 1 or 2 hours only, but it works for about 5 hours after consumption. 1. Decide on a design and trace or cut on smooth side (paper backing) of fusible webbing.  photo (15)
  2. Iron onto decorative fabric.  This will be a reverse image of what will appear on the bag.  Since it’s Minnie, it looks the same either way 🙂
  3. Cut out fabric, remove paper backing and place webbing side down onto bag.  photo (16)
  4. Cover with damp ironing cloth and iron on wool setting for 5-10 seconds (Ironing cloth will be pretty dry once finished ironing).
  5. Using a decorative stitch setting (we chose a zig zag style), stitch around design.  Be careful NOT to stitch through front and back of bag together OR through bag handles (yes…we did that)

6. Create a simple bow from the coordinating ribbon and hand sew onto your Minnie ear design.

Of course, my daughter’s had to be different, so she added a jeweled crown 🙂

Weekly menu board

Anyone can cook! – Chef Gusteau from Disney’s Ratatouille

My husband loves to cook, which makes me feel incredibly blessed, but he needs a plan to help him stay on task, so I created a weekly menu board (with a Disney theme, of course!).  I liked the idea of having each day separate, compared to a single board.

Supplies:

Hello world! DIY Disney Inspired Sharpie Mug

If you can dream it, you can do it–Walt Disney

I am a self-professed Disney ‘junkie.’ I love all things Disney and I love being creative, so this site is my opportunity to share both my love of Disney and my creative side.  For this first post, I want to show you how to create a personalized coffee mug.

Disney inspired
Disney inspired

Items needed:

  • inexpensive coffee mug (Dollar Tree mugs work best)
  • rubbing alcohol
  • Sharpie paint markers (NOT water based)
  • clear contact paper (with design to trace if needed)

It helps to delay or control get viagra from india ejaculation and last longer in bed to enthrall her with sexual pleasure. While these may be right or not, a buy viagra generic healthy exercise routine can help you get rid of this issue and to continue the pleasure in life. You can avail ginseng root buy cialis canadian http://icks.org/n/bbs/content.php?co_id=FALL_WINTER_2013 in different packaging options as per your various requirements. Upshot: the system online cialis pharmacy has been making many bad loans for years.

  1. Wipe all surfaces of mug with rubbing alcohol prior to decorating to remove as much of the glaze as possible (I typically use alcohol wipes).  Let dry.
  2. Trace or draw design on back of contact paper.  Cut out and stick to mug.  All areas covered by contact paper will stay white.
  3. photo (2)
  4. I used a Mickey note pad as my template, but you can download a page of Mickey head templates here.
  5. Some of the paint colors WILL change once baked, so I decided to use a dotted design, which looks better than one solid color.  Using one color at a time, I dotted around the template, letting the paint dry before switching colors.
  6. Once the design was completed, I removed the contact paper and added my name in the center.
  7. Let dry for a few hours (overnight is better).
  8. UPDATE:  Beth at Destination Decoration researched the best time frames for Sharpie mugs.  Her results indicate you should bake at 250 degrees for 2 hours.  You can read about her results here
  9. When I made these previously I baked in an oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, however I recommend following Beth’s recommendation for the best color.
  10. These mugs WILL smell while baking.  I placed the mug in a pan upside down while the oven was cold.
  11. Once it was done cooking, I turned off the oven and left it sitting in there until cool.
  12. Although the paint has been set, I recommend hand-washing instead of using dishwasher.
